Student Led Conference
ENGLISH VERSION
In term 3 we use Student Led Conferences as our form of reporting to parents. The Student Led Conference is one form of reporting to parents adopted by schools worldwide. The aim of the conference is to enable students to display their work, discuss their learning, review their goals and share their feelings about school, with their parents in the natural setting of the school. The Student Led Conference puts the children at the heart of the process of reporting so that they can tell the story of their own achievements. To support parents the process is described below.
There are three participants in each conference-the student, the teacher and the parent/s. Each has a separate role. The Parents’ Role: Your first role is to be a listener. You need to listen to your child with positive interest as he/she presents their work, discusses their strengths and/or weaknesses and reviews past goals and establishes new ones. You should also discuss with your child about their work samples and the learning they represent. This will enable you to plan actions that you may take to support your child to reach their potential. The other important role for you is to complete post conference reflection with your child after the conference as this reflection will become part of the student portfolio and show to the child that you truly support their learning. The Student’s role: On arrival your child should introduce you to the teachers. In the classroom your child can take you on a tour of the classroom explaining their daily routines and showing you work displayed and other pieces of work not included in the portfolio. This provides you with a chance to see a clearer picture of what goes on in the classroom and shows how your child is doing in relation to grade expectations. Your child may then share their portfolio, discuss their learning, the goals that they set in term one and their achievements and areas to develop. Your child will also explain or demonstrate what they learn in other subjects (Literacy, PE, Music/ Arts, Mandarin, Religion, Computer, Library). The Teachers’ role: The teacher is the facilitator. Prior to the conference they will have completed all the preparation to ensure that the students are ready. During the conference, their role is to listen and prompt if necessary while the students are speaking. During the review of goals they can support the students to share their achievements and develop further goals. If a more confidential meeting is required, the teacher should use this setting to set up an additional meeting time. During the Student led conferences students only attend school during their conference time with their parents. If you have any further questions, please contact the school before the conference. |
